The fact or state of knowing; the perception of fact or truth; clear and certain mental apprehension.
15 The discerning person acquires knowledge, and the wise person seeks knowledge.
We acquire knowledge by reading the Bible, studying it, and applying it to our lives. After we are saved, we learn how to live as a Christian example from its instruction. We seek guidance from the Word of God. When we have doubts and need to understand what is right, we can seek counsel straight from the written Word.
However, I tend to forget that all the counsel I need is written for us already. I may seek counsel from my elders, friends, family, or coworkers. By doing so, I place myself at the mercy of their understanding, which may or may not have a solid foundation on the Word of God.
It is normal to allow our thoughts and understanding to dictate our daily words and behavior. However, as we acquire knowledge, we can let go of our “normal” behavior, and allow God to work in us. He provides thoughts and understanding that is acquired by reading and studying the Bible. He provides guidance by the Holy Spirit in us. He convicts our hearts each day, so we may be less “normal” and more Christian.
Today’s verse states that the discerning person acquires knowledge. To be discerning in our daily circumstances we must be able to understand what God’s instruction is for each. This is why we must read, study, learn, and apply His Word.
In order to be wise, we must seek knowledge of God’s instruction. We must want to look for ways to edify ourselves and improve each day in our Living Christian Example. God wants us to be wise in this world so that we may seek truth. He wants us to have knowledge of His Word, so that we make good moral decisions.
In order for us to study the Bible, we must seek it. We must want to search through its chapters and verses so that we may find all we need to live rightfully. We must seek time to read, time to study, and time to learn. As we search for answers, we grow in knowledge. As we seek knowledge, we are better prepared to face the world.
We have to live in this world, but we do not have to be of it. Our goal is to seek and acquire knowledge, so that we may be discerning of good from evil, and wise in the ways of God.
